Gateway NV55S05u Laptop Key Features

The feature set is as standard as it gets in this price range. It has three USB 2.0 ports, and no eSATA or USB 3.0 technology, which have faster transfer speeds than USB 2.0. A USB 3.0 port can be found on the Asus U56E-BBL5. The NV55S05u lacks the latest wireless technologies, such as WiMAX and Wireless Display 2 (WiDi 2.0), which can be found in the Lenovo V570-1066A9U and U56E-BBL5 (although you do get Wi-Fi and Ethernet for network connectivity). Like every other desktop replacement, the NV55S05u has HDMI and VGA video outputs, a webcam, and a multimedia card reader. Although its 640GB, 5,400rpm hard drive matches that of the Samsung RV520-W01 and Asus U56E-BBL5, it's impressive that Gateway included this much in a cheaper laptop.

Gateway ID47H02u laptop comes with a premium aluminum alloy frame and ultra-thin 14-inch screen on the side. Laptops are sold at a price of $ 699 this gives a good first impression, for a thin and light laptop.

Gateway has announced new laptop models that deliver stylish design for a fraction of the cost of other comparable notebooks.

First on the block is the ID47 Series (pictured above). With this laptop, Gateway has managed to pack a 14-inch screen into a 13.3-inch body. The result is an impressive HD widescreen display that has almost no bezel along the sides. The lack of plastic mudding up the edges gives the notebook a nice edge-to-edge look.

The $700 model of the ID47 delivers a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, integrated HD 3000 graphics card, Dolby Home Theater v4 sound package, and a 500GB hard drive. Bump your price range up to $800, and Gateway gives you a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M GPU. Both models include an optical drive, and measure in at a relatively thin 0.85- to 1.14-inches, and a fairly light 4.6 pounds. Gateway also has a $679 model that includes a Core i3 processor, and weights a little more at 5.07 pounds.

There is no outstanding feature on the gateway NV55C03u but rarely found on budget laptops. Fortunately, there are glaring omissions either. There are only 3 USB ports and no eSATA port. There is a multiformat card reader means, but no ExpressCard slot on this model. There is an HDMI port along with a standard VGA port. The optical drive is a standard multi-drive DVD, and hard drive is a 320GB drive spinning at 5400 rpm, which is typical for a laptop at this price.

The software package can not be called large, but also free of bloatware. preinstalled applications include the announcement of support for Microsoft Office 2010 for beginners, Nero 9 Essentials, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security.

Performance

The current processor for laptops over budget, including NV55C03u gateway, P6100 is the Intel Pentium, dual-core CPU entry-level 2.0GHz clock frequency. Lacks support Hyperthreading TurboBoost and technologies used in the more powerful Intel Core i5 and i7 CPU. Gateway pairs the chip with 3 GB DDR3 SDRAM, a gigabyte unless the Pentium-P6100 Acer Aspire 5742Z-4097 supplies.

Our laboratory tests showed no real performance increase of the Acer 5742Z-4097 for additional memory. In fact, the NV55C03u who overcame a series of tests, including PCMark Vantage, hand brake (3 minutes 42 seconds) and Photoshop CS5 (06:55). The numbers were close, however, with the two budget laptops turning in acceptable performance for the price. A laptop-based i3 such as the Acer AS5745-7247 costs a little more, but performance becomes significantly better. The 5252 score was 20 percent faster than the score of Gateway 4373. Similarly, the Acer AS5745-7247 completed our Photoshop CS5 reference in 5:39, which is 18 percent faster than the gateway of 06:55.

The Pentium processor NV55C03u is not as fast as a Core i3, and is not as efficient. The gateway lasted only 3 hours and 28 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 test battery discharge. In comparison, the Acer Aspire AS5745-7247 ran for 4 hours and 49 minutes in the same test.

There is no outstanding feature on the NV55C03u, but there is no last-minute failure front. What makes it difficult to recommend is the fact that other budget models that cost only a little more performance and provide better battery life. Editor’s Choice of Acer Aspire AS5745-7247 costs $ 100 more, but the blows that up i3 Core CPU and considerable performance edge.
